Bio: Now in his second season with the club, defender Noah Merl will be a vital piece on the Sounders backline. Last year, Merl ranked second in minutes played by a defender to Danny Jackson and should see similar playing time in 2007.
The Walnut Creek, Calif., native was drafted in the third round of the 2005 MLS
Supplemental Draft by the San Jose Earthquakes and played for the Earthquake Reserves during the 2005 season.
A University of California Berkeley graduate, Merl appeared in every collegiate match and started 64 straight as he earned all-conference honors and all-academic honors in his last three seasons. In his junior and senior seasons, Merl was an All-Pac-10 Second Team selection and was chosen for Pac-10 All-Academic Teams. Merl recorded three goals and five assists in his career at Cal.
