SOUNDERS CAN'T HOLD LEAD, LOSE 3-1 TO VANCOUVER
Posted 5/12/2007

The Seattle Sounders scored first, when Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar netted a penalty kick in the 26th minute, but eventually gave up a lead for the second time in as many days, losing 3-1 to the Vancouver Whitecaps in front of 2,577 fans at Qwest Field on Saturday.

Seattle was up 2-0 late in the game at Portland on Friday, but had to settle for a 2-2 draw. Less than 24 hours later, the Sounders again saw a lead disappear against the USL First Division champion Whitecaps.

In the 50th minute, Vancouver grabbed its first lead of the game at 2-1, when a loose ball in the penalty box found its way to David Testo. The 25-year old midfielder then buried it from 12 yards out past Seattle's Chris Eylander.

The Whitecaps extended their lead to three when second-half substitute Tony Donatelli fired a 16-yard rocket past Eylander to the lower left corner. The assist went to another substitute, Joey Bailey.

The Sounders had scored first in the 26th minute. Seattle's Roger Levesque set up the score when he fed forward Nathan Knox in the penalty box.

The shot by Knox was blocked by the hand of a Vancouver defender, resulting in a Seattle penalty kick. Hugo Alcaraz-Cuellar took the penalty; his shot to right side of the net had goalkeeper Tony Caig going the wrong direction.

It was Alcaraz-Cuellar's first goal as a Sounder and first of the season.

It was also the first time all season that Vancouver hadn't scored the match's first goal. Seattle has scored first in the last three matches.

Twelve minutes later, in the 37th minute, Vancouver found the equalizing goal. Whitecap defender Steve Kindel made a run past Seattle's Noah Merl and centered it to forward Eduardo Sebrango, who scored from point blank range.
