Seattle Sounders fans who bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation to Saturday night’s 7pm exhibition match between the Sounders and Chivas USA of Major League Soccer will not only help the Sounders win the “Fuel the Dream Summer Food Drive Challenge” between the Sounders and the Seattle Storm, but will also receive a free ticket to the June 28th Sounders home match against Miami FC.
This is the second year running that the Sounders have faced Chivas USA in an early season exhibition and the first time they’ve participated in the “Fuel the Dream Challenge.” Last season the Sounders lost to Chivas with the single goal coming from former Sounder midfielder Brent Whitfield.
This year, it’s former Seattle forward Maykel Galindo who looks to be the danger man in front of net for Chivas USA. He’s netted five goals in eight games played which is good enough for the team lead and places him third overall amongst goal scorers in MLS.
The number two man on the all time minutes played list for the Sounders all time, Preston Burpo, will be between the pipes for Chivas USA. He featured in 19 matches in 2006, but has struggled to find better form than Brad Guzan, whose superior play has earned him a call up for the United States National team’s Gold Cup Squad.
The Sounders come into the match riding a two game winning streak and look to have finally found their form after a difficult start to the regular season.
Chivas USA defeated MLS Western Conference leaders Dallas FC on the weekend on the strength of second half goals from Galindo and Ante Razov.
Chivas USA head coach Preki, played in the Northwest for the Tacoma Stars indoor team early in his playing career. He took the reigns at Chivas from Bob Bradley when he took the position as U.S. National Team Coach.
Bradley guided Chivas USA to their first ever playoff appearance last year and brought in creative midfielder Armado Guevara from Red Bull New York over the off season.
Preki has stamped his label on the Chivas USA squad by releasing Guevara and signing midfielder Paolo Nagamura from Toronto FC early in the season.
Last season’s match as marred by a nasty collision between Burpo and Galindo (then playing for the Sounders) that left led to Galindo missing 18 matches and having reconstructive face surgery.
Tickets for Saturday’s match are available through ticketmaster.com and at 15 Pawn Exchange locations throughout the Seattle area.
Note: This is a special exhibition match, so flex tickets and youth passes will not be valid for this event. Season long parking pass holders please note that your green parking pass labeled June 2, California Victory is now valid for the September 6 California Victory match.
