CHRIS EYLANDER VISITS WITH THE "GOALIE WHISPERER"
Posted 7/26/2007

Sounder Central sent their very own "goalie whisperer", 13 year-old Tony Johnson (on a break from school, luckily; no truancy involved), to the Sounders' Media Day earlier this spring, in an attempt to get some truly pressing questions answered by Sounders goal keeper Chris Eylander.

TJ: If you were to sneak into a movie, what movie would it be?

CE: Good question. It'd probably be a movie like Gladiator--that's my favorite movie of all time. I like Russell Crowe; he's my favorite actor.

TJ: If you were to sneak a certain kind of candy into a movie theater, what kind would it be?

CE: On some days I would definitely go for a Milky Way. On other days, I might go for a taffy, maybe on other days I'd go for a Starburst. Probably I'd go with my first choice, go for a Milky Way.

TJ: What was the first soccer team you ever played for?

CE: I think it was a recreational team in the Auburn Youth Soccer Association. I played for a team in earlier days called Ajax... just a club team down in Auburn, because I grew up there.

TJ: What's the step from college to professional; how big is it?

CE: It was actually a pretty good step. The seriousness of the game picks up a bit, and the player has to really own it for himself. In college you select to go there for four years, you can put in your work and play and have a decent career, but when you go to the next level, you definitely have to own it. You have to go out there, you have to play your position, you have to work to make yourself better. Physically the guys are stronger than college, technically guys are better, the play of the game is better... Definitely a step above college, because the player really has to decide he's going to go out and do this to play pro. You have to put in the work and fight to get to do that.

TJ: What was your most memorable moment with the Sounders?

CE: I can think of two most memorable moments. One was against the Chivas, my first time playing against an MLS team, the excitement of the crowd, playing up a level, and actually playing them really well. They beat us 1-0. The other one was Kids Day, which was kind of fun because of all the kids there, and I personally had a really good game.

TJ: What was the funniest moment you've ever had in goal?

CE: There was something really funny just a couple of weeks ago, in practice. I was playing off my line a little bit, because there was a forward who was offsides, so I was playing 18 yards or so off my line. It was a small-sided game, and I looked up and Danny Jackson just got the ball, and he was trying to trick-chip me from 50 yards out, so I instantly started turning back, running and sprinting, and I lost the ball in the sun a little bit and was really disoriented and didn't know where my goal was, so when I jumped, trying to tip the ball over, I was already pretty much in the goal, so I jumped and slammed into the net and fell down. I don't know if it's the funniest thing that ever happened to me, though. ------
