PREVIEW: SOUNDERS VS COLORADO RAPIDS IN OPEN CUP QUARTER FINAL
Posted 8/6/2007

The Seattle Sounders face the Colorado rapids of Major League Soccer in a US Open Cup quarter final match at Qwest Field on Tuesday night. Kick off is at 7pm.

The Sounders come into the match unbeaten in 10 matches overall. That record includes a 3-1 US Open Cup win against Chivas USA in the third round to book a spot in the quarter finals.

Colorado has only four wins in MLS play this season and has not won in their last 10 league matches. They defeated the California Victory in the Third round of the US Open Cup.

Roger Levesque has led the Sounders with four goals and six assists in his last six matches. He’s tied with strike partner Sebastien Le Toux for the team lead in regular season goals scored with six and leads the team in points with 15.

Levesque’s lone goal in the Sounders 1-0 win over the Puerto Rico Islanders on Saturday night took Seattle to the top of the USL First Division table, thanks in large part to the work of goal keeper Chris Eylander, who leads the USL First Division in shutouts with nine and saves with 88.

This will be the Sounders fourth trip to the quarter finals of the US Open Cup where they have a one win and two loss record. Their only win came in 1995 against the Chicago Crooks. They lost in the semifinals to the El Paso Patriots that year. Their most recent appearance was in 2003 where they lost 5-1 to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Colorado defeated the Seattle Sounders in the third round of the 1999 US Open Cup on their way to the finals where they lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos, who remain the only USL team to have won the US Open Cup since 1996 when MLS began to compete in the tournament.

Rapids head coach Fernando Clavijo is in his third and to date most disappointing season with Colorado. The former Seattle Seadogs head coach and long time friend of Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer, led the rapids to the Western Conference Finals in his first two seasons with the club, but has failed to find the winning combination so far in 2007.

Former Seattle Sounder Herculez Gomez leads the Rapids in scoring with four goals in his first year with the club after an off season transfer from the Los Angeles Galaxy. Clivijo also picked up University of Washington product and former Sounder Brandon Prideaux from DC United during the off season.

If Seattle wins the quarter final match they will host the semifinals against either Dallas FC of MLS or the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division on September 4th, pending stadium availability.

Next up for the Sounders is the first league match of the season against the Minnesota Thunder, who recently signed former US International defender Tony Sanneh. The match is Saturday night, August 11th, at Qwest Field and kickoff is at 7pm.
