SEATTLE, WA: The Seattle Sounders saw their 15 match unbeaten run come to an end Friday night with a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Thunder. The loss was the first for Seattle since June 23rd.
Minnesota received two goals from defender Kyle Zenoni his first of the season to go ahead before the Sounders pulled a late goal back through Roger Levesque. The goal was Levesque's eigth on the season and puts him within one of the USL First Division lead in goals scored.
Minnesota had an opportuinity in the fifth minute of the game off of a free-kick taken by Thunder defenseman Kevin Friedland. Friedland tapped the ball two yards to his right to John Greenfield, and Greenfield attempted a shot just outside of the 18 yard box that went wide right.
The Minnesota Thunder drew blood first, scoring in the 23rd minute. Sounder defender Kevin Sakuda attempted to clear the ball out of the 18 yard box, but Zenoni blocked the clearance. As the ball made it's way down, Zenoni put his foot on the sphere and knocked it over Eylander for his first goal of the season.
Near the end of the first half, a Minnesota through pass made it's way to Thunder midfielder Brian Farber, but it was appearant Seattle thought he was offside. As they started to slow due to the the assumed offside call, Farber passed the ball to an open Kyle Zenoni. Zenoni kicked the ball onto the right side of the goal, just edging inside the post. The goal was Zenoni's second goal of the game and gave the Thunder the 2-0 lead.
The Sounders were finally able to put a tally on the board thanks to a play started by second half substitute Craig Tomlinson. Tomlinson was released down the left side of the field and crossed the ball from the touchline to Andre Schmid, who then flicked on to Roger Levesque whose header nesteled into the back of the net.
The goal awakened Seattle's offense and they nearly tied the game in the 84th minute off of a corner kick by Leighton O'Brien. Zach Scott received the corner kick and directed the ball just over the cross bar.
The Sounders controlled the finla 15 minutes of the match but were unable to notch the equalizer, surrendering the game to the Thunder, 2-1.
With the loss the Sounders USL First division league is cut to just one point over both Portland and Montreal with regular season matches at home against California and away to Minnesota still to play.
The Sounders will make an attempt at franchise history on Tuesday when the team takes on FC Dallas in the semifinal round of the US Open Cup at Qwest Field. The Sounders have never played in a US Open Cup final before, and with a win over the Hoops, the team will clinch their first US Open Cup finals berth. Seattle will also host the finals game on October 2 and face either the New England Revolution (MLS) or the Carolina RailHawks (USL-1).
