SEATTLE KICKS DOWN RICHMOND:Sounders Upend League Leading Kickers
6/4/2005
RICHMOND, Va. - C.J. Klaas set up both goals and Preston Burpo registered another shutout as the Seattle Sounders defeated the Richmond Kickers, 2-0, Friday at the University of Richmond Stadium.

For their first road game of the 2005 season the Sounders (3-1-2) decided to press the issue against the league’s top team. In the 16th minute C.J. Klaas sent a free kick off the top of the cross bar from 25 yards. Kevin Sakuda’s right footed liner from 17 yards was knocked down, and then cradled by Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale in the 29th minute.

Then, in stoppage time in the first half Billy Sleeth sent a header wide of the left post from 12 yards up. Meanwhile Sounders ‘keeper Burpo continued to keep a clean sheet. He came up with big stops against the Kickers in the 31st minute, diving out off his line to stop an attempted cross from 8-yards.

Richmond (8-2-1) ended the first half with just nine players on the field thanks to some late injuries to two of their players. Those two players returned for the start of the second half and with it came a much more physical Kickers squad. But that physical play led to two yellow cards against midfielder Tim Brown and that led to the automatic red card ejection in 54th minute.

Seattle Sounders Women Fall 3-2 to the Mile High Mustangs
6/3/2005
DENVER- The Seattle Sounders Women fell to the Mile High Mustangs tonight in Denver as the Mustangs now lead the 2005 series between the two teams 2-0. Goals by Sounders midfielders Nicole Garbin and Malia Arrant were not enough to surpass the three goals netted by the Mustang offense.

With the Mustangs ahead 1-0 at the half the Sounders Women came out aggressive and Nicole Garbin, in her first match with the Women, netted her first goal of the young season off an assist from Karly Larson, who was also playing in her first match as a Sounder.

Later in the second half Mile High was able to capitalize on a rebound from the Sounders defense to get ahead on the scoreboard, 2-1.

Minutes later a Sounders Women’s defender was called for a handball in the penalty box resulting in a penalty kick for the Mustangs. Mile High took advantage of the opportunity and netted their third goal of the game, now leading 3-2.

SEATTLE- The Seattle Sounders announce today the signing of Jake Sagare (pictured), former Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder and University of Washington standout.

Sagare, 25, has played the last two months with Seattle’s rival club, the Vancouver Whitecaps. Previous to the time spent in Vancouver, he was with the other I-5 rival club, the Portland Timbers for three years.

Drafted by Portland in the third round (53rd overall) of the 2002 college draft, the 5'11", 165-pounder, amassed five goals and nine assists in 52 caps for the Timbers.

Sagare, who has dual citizenship with England and the United States, had two stints in Europe during his tenure in Portland. Sagare also played for Halifax Town of the English Nationwide Conference following the 2003 United Soccer Leagues (USL) season.

LEVESQUE GOAL IN STOPPAGE TIME LIFTS SEATTLE TO 1-0 WIN
5/26/2005
SEATTLE – Roger Levesque (pictured courtesy of George Holland) scored his first goal of the season in stoppage time and gave rookie Gabe Sturm his first assist as a professional in the process as the Seattle Sounders overcame the Virginia Beach Mariners 1-0 Wednesday night at Qwest Field. The important victory not only ended a goal-scoring drought for the Sounders, but also closes out a six-game home stand on a winning note before taking off on a two-game road trip.

Preston Burpo wasn’t very busy as his defense put in a typically strong effort, but he nonetheless extended his shutout streak to four games in four played as he has yet to give up a goal this season.

In just their second visit to Seattle ever, the Mariners put in a valiant effort and almost held on for the scoreless draw – an especially brave effort after being reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute, when veteran defender Steve Shak was shown a red card for a reckless challenge from behind on Sounders midfielder C.J. Klaas.

SOUNDERS WOMEN HOLD WHITECAPS SCORELESS IN 2-0 SHUTOUT
5/25/2005
SEATTLE – In an amazing all-around team effort, the Seattle Sounders Women halted the Whitecaps’ long-time winning streak after a 2-0 shutout tonight at Qwest Field. Sounders players Hillary Heath and Malia Arrant stepped up to the pressure and each scored one goal forcing Vancouver to play catch-up right from the beginning of the game. However, Vancouver’s well-fought efforts remained fruitless.

Only four minutes into the first half and with the first shot the game, Sounder forward Hillary Heath drove the ball to the back of the Whitecaps net at the top of the 18 on an assist from defender Kelli Smith. As the youngest player on the team, Heath attends Garfield High School and will be lacing up to play Division I soccer at Stanford University this coming Fall.

The second goal for the Sounders came in the 68th minute on a build-up of passes beginning with midfielder Nikki Gamble, who first passed the ball outside to forward Brenda Mueller near the Whitecaps goal. Mueller then dribbled up the line and crossed the ball to the center of the box where Arrant one-touched the ball past the Whitecaps goalkeeper.
