2005 US OPEN CUP FORMAT UNVEILED, SOUNDERS TO ENTER TOURNAMENT IN 2ND ROUND
2/3/2005
(SEATTLE, WA) - The Seattle Sounders will enter the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in the 2nd round of play on June 29th. All eight U.S. based United Soccer Leagues First Division teams will participate in the Open Cup, entering the tournament based on 2004 regular season league results.

After several years of success, the Sounders failed to qualify for the 2004 Open Cup, getting knocked out of the tournament by the Portland Timbers. The 2003 tournament saw the Sounders advance to the quarterfinals before being defeated by the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer. Earlier that year in Open Cup play, the Sounders defeated Landon Donovan, Brian Ching and the San Jose Earthquakes, 1-0, in a dramatic match at Husky Soccer Field.

A total of 42 teams – 26 professional and 16 amateur – will compete in the 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as it kicks off in June. After 40 teams participated in the prestigious tournament in 2004, two expansion Major League Soccer teams have been added to the fray in 2005, bringing the total number of teams to its highest level since MLS began participating in the event in 1996.

TAMPA, FL – United Soccer Leagues players from the USL First Division and USL Second Division are headed home Saturday following the end of the labor dispute between US Soccer and the US Men’s National Team Players Association Friday evening.

With the US regulars being called into camp for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Trinidad & Tobago February 9, the 22 USL players called into camp a week ago by Head Coach Bruce Arena are being sent back to their clubs.

“We are extremely proud of the players who represented United Soccer Leagues very well over the past week in Carson,” said USL Vice President Tim Holt. “It would have been wonderful to see them play in the qualifier, but we are happy to hear that the regulars will be in camp soon preparing to qualify for the World Cup.”

USL Players in US Men’s National Team Training Camp

Statement from USL President Francisco Marcos

As an organization, United Soccer Leagues is as disappointed by the current labor impasse between US Soccer and the US Men’s National Team Players Association (USMNTPA) as both parties and US soccer fans are. At the same time, we wholeheartedly support the professional USL players who were invited to the US Men’s National Team training camp.

We are appreciative of US Soccer and Coach Bruce Arena’s confidence in deciding to invite our players to camp to be a part of the qualifying process. We have always felt our top professionals can compete on the international level for the United States. Numerous players in the USL First Division are regulars for nations like Canada, Liberia and, ironically, our first qualifying opponent, Trinidad and Tobago.

Long Holiday
These include former Scottish international Jimmy Gabriel and one-time Northern Ireland FIFA World Cup striker Colin Clarke, who ended up in the US by chance nine years ago. "I came to visit some friends, someone offered me a job and I ended up staying," he explained.
