(Seattle, Wash) - - The Seattle Sounders announced today they have reached an agreement with forward Welton Melo, pending International Clearance from US Soccer. The Brazilian native returns to the Sounders after an impressive 2004 season.
The 2004 season, Welton’s first with the Sounders, saw the striker play in 23 games totaling 1,572 minutes and netting a team high 10 goals. He finished the season tied for first place in points (20) with teammate Roger Levesque.
Head coach Brian Schmetzer on Melo, “It’s great to have our leading goal scorer back for another year. Welton can make the difference in big games and he was sorely missed in the final match in 2004. We look for great things from Welton again this year.”
Born in Cabuci, Brazil, Welton began his professional career at the age of 19 in Rio de Janeiro with Fluminense in 1994. In 1995 Welton split the season with Flamengo and América, two teams also in Rio de Janeiro area.

(Seattle, WA) – The Seattle Sounders today announced the signing of 21 year old, former National Team member C.J. Klaas. Klaas joins the Sounders after playing for the Under 20 National Team for a year and a half after being a member of the National Team pool for over seven years. The 5-7 midfielder/ defender played in every game in the World Youth Championship with the U-20’s in The United Arab Emirates, where the U.S. placed fifth in December 2003.
As a Husky, Klaas made history. He was named NSCAA/ Adidas All- American first-team twice, making him the first player in the UW men’s soccer program to ever be a first-team All- American selection two times. He also became the first player in Pac-10 history to earn four all-conference honors.
In 2004, the senior co-captain led the Huskies to the first round of the NCAA tournament. He scored a career high five goals and matched his career high with six assists in 19 matches. He was named to the NSCAA All-Far West region first-team, the all Pac-10 first-team and was the 2004 co-Player of the Year. He was also a semifinalist for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy for the second consecutive year.

(Seattle, Wash.) – The Seattle Sounders Professional Soccer Club will play English League Championship Club, Sunderland AFC, in an exhibition match on July 20th at Qwest Field, it was announced today. The match kicks off at 7 pm (PT).
Sunderland AFC is currently in third position in the English League Championship, Coca-Cola 1st Division. The top three finishers in the division are promoted to the English Premier League (EPL) which features internationally recognized franchises such as, Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.
Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer: “We certainly look forward to playing Sunderland. It will be a great test for our guys and it will also give the people of Seattle a great chance to experience top quality English soccer.”
Sunderland Manager Mick McCarthy: "We traveled to the USA for pre-season last year and it was great preparation for the season. The warm weather is perfect for training and the different environment is good for everyone.

(Seattle, WA)- The Seattle Sounders today announced the signing of midfielder Andrew Gregor. The Portland, OR native returns to the Sounders after splitting the 2004 season between the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Portland Timbers. With the Timbers the majority of the season, Gregor played 13 games and notched two goals and two assists.
“I am very familiar with Andrew after having him play for me in two previous years,” said head coach Brian Schmetzer. “I know what he can bring to the team. Andrew is a very talented and smart soccer player. He was a major factor in leading us to the Western Conference Finals in 2003.”
In 2003, the 5-11, 160 pound midfielder notched seven goals and seven assists in 25 caps for the Sounders. At the conclusion of the 2003 season, Gregor ranked 14th in scoring in the A-League standings. He was also named to the all A-League First Team.

(Seattle, WA) - The Seattle Sounders announced today the re-signing of midfielder/ defender Billy Sleeth. The 6-0, 170 pound Sleeth returns to the Sounders after registering two goals and two assists in 2004.
Prior to joining the Sounders, Sleeth was a member of the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer (MLS). Sleeth’s 2003 Season was cut short when he suffered a broken foot in pre-season play. Never fully recovering, Sleeth was plagued by reoccurring foot injuries, eventually causing him to miss the entire 2003 season.
Originally drafted as the 10th overall pick by the Chicago Fire (MLS) in the 2002 MLS Draft, Sleeth saw time in 13 games, starting seven and registering one assist.

(Seattle, WA)- The Seattle Sounders today announced their pre-season U.S. Bank exhibition schedule beginning in early April at Pop Keeney Field in Bothell. The pre-season schedule will take the Sounders all over the Northwest, including Canada.
The 2005 pre-season kicks off April 2nd against the Gonzaga Bulldogs at Pop Keeney Field in Bothell at 7 pm. The match is sponsored by the Northshore Youth Soccer Association; for directions and ticket information visit www.northshoresoccer.org.
The remaining pre-season schedule includes two games against USL 1st Division rivals, the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

(Seattle, WA) - The Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) team of the week was released yesterday, honoring Danny Waltman, back up goalkeeper for the 2004 Seattle Sounders for the second time this season.
Waltman, currently a member of the Chicago Storm, helped his team to a 5-1 victory over Milwaukee on Friday, February 11. Waltman recorded 10 saves for the game, earning his 11th win this season and helping his team advance into fourth-place with an 11-12 mark for the season.

O’Brien is currently training with Real Salt Lake (recent MLS expansion club) and Jackson joins the Kansas City Wizards this weekend.
“Both Leighton and Danny are exceptional talents, I’m not surprised MLS took notice of them and invited them to train with their teams,” said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer.
O’Brien, a Sounder in 2001-2002, spent the last two seasons with Swedish club, Boden. In 2002, the Sounders captain was named A-League Most Valuable Player, leading the Sounders to the 3rd best record in league history at 23-4-1. The Tacoma native was originally drafted by the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS.
Real Salt Lake head coach John Ellinger requested O’Brien join their training sessions in Bradenton, FL.
